Dalai's 'photographic evidence' debunked (or not)

Today I read on Shanghai Daily that the picture that the Dalai Lama has been showing to prove that Chinese soldiers dressed as priest to start the violence in Tibet is not real.  According to this report is is an old photo.   I am not going to post the two contrasting photos on the site. Please click the Shanghai Daily link to see them.  However, I am going to comment on them.

In the first photo you see many Chinese soldiers with no hats on but in uniform.  Most of them are holding monk style clothes.  In the second photo  you see some sort of special honor guard dressed very smartly in what looks like new uniforms.   The third and fourth photos show examples of the winter hat used by Chinese soldiers when it is cold.

On the surface this looks like pretty good evidence and perhaps China has a point.  But let me say this.  I don't know what photo the Dalai Lama is showing, perhaps its this one, perhaps its not.  It doesn't matter.  I live in China and I see soldiers everyday.  To say there is some sort of standard uniform would be an oversight at best.  Many of the younger soldiers I see are wearing what look like second hand uniforms that where made for much bigger men.  They are wearing store bought black shoes, not military issue.  Many times they are wearing store bought shirts for their uniforms.  You can see 10 soldiers in one place and all seem to be wearing different uniforms.  So the first claim in the story about the updated uniforms proving that it is a false picture is very easily thrown aside.

Another argument they make is that in Tibet at this time it was very cold and the soldiers would have been wearing their winter hats.  This would be a good argument if you could see any hats at all in the original photo.  Since there are no hats in the photo we don't know what hats they were wearing.  Added to that.  If you where going to dress like a monk you surely would not be wearing some sort of warm hat.   So there is no proof in this story one way or the other about the authenticity of the picture.

This story does bring up another question though.  If these uniforms and soldiers are pictured on or before 1987 why where they all holding monk clothes.  Why does it look like they are about to put these clothes on.  Why would Chinese soldiers be dressing like Tibetan monks.  Perhaps China has let a little more out of the bag then it should have.
